How to Choose a Dust Collector: V-System or Supercell

The V-System and the Supercell are both high-performance dust collection systems. If you're trying to decide which one is right for you, you've come to the right place. If you still have questions after reading the below, don't hesitate to contact our experienced sales staff for assistance.

V-System or Supercell?

When deciding between the V-System and the Supercell, the choice comes down to two primary factors - the dust port sizes on the tools in your shop, and whether or not two tools with 4-6" dust ports will be run at the same time. With that in mind…

Choose the V-System if:

  1. All of your tools have 4" or larger dust ports, AND
  2. Two tools with 4-6" dust ports will be in operation at the same time

Choose the Supercell if:

  1. The largest dust port on any of your tools is 5" or less, AND
  2. Only one tool with a 4-5" dust port will be used at a time

Port Sizes The V-System is intended for tools with 4" and above diameter ports. The Supercell is intended for tools with 5" and under diameter dust ports.
Number of Tools in Use The V-System will allow two 4"+ blast gates to be open at a time, meaning two operators can use tools with 4-6" dust ports at the same time. The Supercell can accommodate one tool at a time with a 4" or 5" dust port. However, it can accommodate up to three tools with 1" to 2.5" dust ports simultaneously.
Space Constraints The V-System is a larger system at 88"H (35 gal.) or 100"H (55 gal.) with a footprint of 47" x 30". The Supercell is a compact system at 61"H (14 gal.), 71.5"H (35 gal.), or 83"H (55 gal.) with a footprint of 20" x 21" (14 gal.) or 23.5" x 23.5" (35 and 55 gal.).
Shop Design The V-System connects to ductwork with a 7" inlet. The Supercell can connect to up to 100 feet of 4" hose and/or ductwork.
Mobility The V-System comes with either a wall mounting bracket or a freestanding leg kit. The Supercell is available with a wall mount or in a mobile version.

Yes it does! Both dust collectors use the same HEPA Certified filter media, though the V-System has a larger filter to accommodate hits larger airflow rate. You can see more information in the Specifications tab on each product's webpage.

Can your supercell system connect to my existing 6” S&D piping? I’d hate to tear it all down. My shop is only 24x14, and the longest hard pipe run of the 6” stuff is only 28’. Machines all connect off of this trunk with 4” flex piping. Question is: if I were to connect the supercell unit through a 4” to 6” adapter, would there be a significant performance loss down at the machines due to going through my 6” trunk line? I’d appreciate a quantitative answer, if possible. Kind Regards, Bill

If you already have 6" pipe installed and wish to continue using it, we would recommend the V-System over the Supercell. Using the Supercell with a main trunk line larger than 4" will result in a noticeable loss in airflow performance. Even though a 6" duct allows for a higher theoretical airflow rate (CFM), the system is limited by its design i.e. the Supercell's construction (i.e. its shape, fan motors, inlet, etc.) are specifically designed for use with connections 4" or smaller. Both dust collectors are extremely powerful and versatile systems, but they are built for specific applications.

I am just starting on my retirement quest and want to set up my workshop right from the start, My space is 20x16 and to have the equipment that I want/need (planner, table saw, band saw, drill press, sander, possibly a lathe (later), I want to have the right vacuum system. What would you suggest since space will be limited?

With the number of large tools that you described (particularly the lathe and planer) you will likely be better served with a wall-mounted V-System for your shop - especially if you are running dedicated ducting to each tool. You could consider the possibility of locating the dust collector in an enclosure outside the shop to help save on space, provided that you properly account for filtered air returning to the shop. Apologies for the late reply Herb, if you (or other readers) are still in need of an answer: With either system, using one 4" port at a time is preferred as it allows the airflow to be focused at a single tool. However, the V-System has sufficient CFM to collect from two 4" ports simultaneously, e.g. on a bandsaw, large drum sander, or table saw with multiple dust ports.

While the Supercell only needs 2-3" of clearance above the unit to properly vent exhaust air from the motor, you will need to allow for 24" of clearance above the Motor Assembly to allow for its removal during filter replacement and other maintenance.

If absolutely necessary, the unit could be disassembled by disconnecting the cyclone and motor assembly entirely from the mounting bracket. This is a much more cumbersome step however and most customers will want to just lift the motor assembly off instead. However, the Supercell rarely needs to be disassembled for cleaning thanks to the integral Pulse Filter Cleaner system. Dust is blasted off of the filter and contained entirely within the dust collector for disposal, making cleaning quick and easy.

Will the wall mounted Supercell transmit noise through the wall? I live in a town home and don't want noise to travel through the walls and disturb my neighbors.

Any motorized, wall-mounted unit will transmit some vibration into the surface it's mounted to. While there are steps you can take to minimize this noise transference, though your neighbors will probably better appreciate you mounting it to a different wall instead of the one you share with them.

Could a Supercell be placed in the loft above my workshop space - with an extended chip collection hose cut in through the floor to the collector drum below? I have enough clearance in the loft for the collector.

Yes! This is definitely something you could do and we have had a number of customers who have done this with all sorts of Oneida Air dust collectors, including the Supercell. If you go this route, we would recommend locating the Dust Sentry within the workspace so you can still be alerted to the dust bin's fill level. The other thing to keep an eye out for is that with an extended connection hose between the cyclone and the dust bin, you may have material buildup within the hose over time that you may need to shake loose. The flow rate within that hose is much lower than the rest of the system as most of the air has been separated from the waste material in the cyclone.

I am really interested in the supercell. My SawStop table saw and my router table both have a 4" connector and a 1.5" connector that will operate at the same time. I'm guessing that with the amount of suction the Super Cell has, that it should work fine?

Hi Patrick, Yes the Supercell should work well for your tools. You're on the cusp of potentially benefitting more from getting a larger dust collector like the V-System, so you should take into consideration if you envision getting larger tools (with larger ports) down the road.

I have a small shop - 12'x25' and am interested in the supercell, but my largest tool is a hammer a3-41 16" jointer / planer with a 125mm dust port. I don't currently have any permanent piping. I know that's right on the boundary Would that be compatible with the supercell or should I go with a V-System?

OK I am looking at both of these machines and I am confused as to what to do. I currently run a 2 hp system in my small shop. for my stationary tools I have a 8 inch jointer and a Laguna 18BX bandsaw and sawstop 3hp PCS with floating Overarm dust collection. Both the bandsaw and table saw have 2 4 inch ports. I use a single line that I plug in to whatever tool I am running. everything is within about 10 feet of the collector when in use. Not sure which collector is best for me. I worry the supercell wont be enough and the v system will be choked and lose performance running on a 4 inch line.

Hi Chuck, While I do recommend that you speak with one our technical sales reps for a more detailed answer, in general I think the V-system would be the better option for your shop. Particularly because of the multiple 4-inch ports you'll have in use simultaneously on each of your larger stationary tools. It should not have any issue with the 4-inch line, as you'll be splitting it off from the 7-inch inlet originally. However, it would be much more beneficial for you to use 7-inch hose to get over to the tool and then split and neck down gradually to 4 inches at the port (perhaps using a 7x5x5 wye, 5" hose, and then 5x4 reducers at the port).

My shop is a 3 car garage - roughly 20 X 30 with 8 1/2 foot ceilings. I have a 36" Sawstop PCS/router table combo, 8" jointer, 15" planer, 14" bandsaw, full size lathe, 12" miter saw, drill press, belt/disc sander and a spindle sander. All the stationary tools have 4" ports, except the planner at 5". The miter saw, belt/disc sander and spindle sander all have 2 1/2 or smaller ports. I am the only one in my shop using tools 90% of the time. I know I'm going to wind up using your design service and technical sales folks but I have 3 preliminary questions: 1. My shop has 3 separate, 10 foot garage doors with the usual rails, 12 LED light fixtures at 4 foot each, 3 garage door openers and a ceiling mounted Jet air filter. Things are neatly arranged but the ceiling seems rather busy. Is ceiling mounted duct work a viable option? 2. I'm concerned about noise level with the Super Cell. What's the db reading for the Super Cell vs. the V system? 3. Can the V system work as a dust collection solution for a miter saw or am I better off with a dedicated shop vac like I currently use? Thanks for your help.

Hi Dave, thanks for all the great questions! It's a bit hard for us to answer all of your preliminary questions without seeing a drawing of your shop, but we'll try! (1) It does sound rather busy, but you could possibly run ducting along the walls and then only branch out into the shop to reach individual tools as needed, rather than running everything across your ceiling. (2) The V-System is the quieter of the two dust collectors, with the V-3000 coming in at 74 dBA @ 10 feet. (3) The V-System may struggle a bit with such a small port, but there are other options that can help with your saw's dust collection; Check out our Miter Saw Ductwork Kit (item #KDZ000006) as an example.

I have a 20'x20' shop that I'm using for woodworking in my retirement. I have a table saw, a router table, a small lathe, a band saw. a miter saw and a 13" planer with an old Delta 1 hp portable dust collector. Which, if any, dust collector would you recommend? I also have a Radial arm saw which I'll probably get rid of.

The answer to your question would be heavily dependent on what size the dust ports on your tools are, as well as how many (if any) tools would need to be in operation simultaneously. Though with the size of your shop, you would probably be looking towards the Supercell generally since it is a much more compact product. Does the Supercell use an induction motor or is it using a universal motor. Also is how are you filtering the fine dust from the large chips? Your Supercell system looks like a whole house vacuum, is that the similar technology?

Both the fine dust and the large chips are captured and removed from the airstream by the system's cyclone separator. You could say it's similar to a central vacuum in many ways, considering it's high suction power and compact, wall-mounted design, but it is still a dust collector.

I have the 5hp DG Pro handling most of my shop with the exception of a few workstations; the miter saw bench, the sanding station, and a pocket hole / joiner station. Those three stations all have their own dedicated dust extractors; a 14 gallon Bosch dust extractor for the ph/joiner, a Festool ct48 with cyclone for sanding, and a simple box store 14 gallon shop vac with cyclone for the miter saw. I'd really like to rearrange the stations and run duct work, with blast gates at each station, so they're all in line and replace all the separate collectors with just one Supercell. Watching some different videos I feel safe assuming that the Supercell will run circles around my other extractors. I guess my only concern would be the use of the Supercell with my palm sanders. Would there be enough airflow while sanding or would I be putting too much of a strain on the Supercell motors? Thanks!

Bill, from the sounds of it, most of your tools that you're looking to hookup are going to have fairly small ports (2.5 to 1.5"). While the Supercell will definitely be able to handle these without issue, the Dust Cobra might be a more economical choice for you to consider. The Supercell would be better suited if you had at least one two requiring a 4" port, but since it doesn't seem like that's the case, the Dust Cobra might give you more bang for your buck. Hi. I'm back. I have some additional questions. First, are the electrical outlet requirements for the Supercell and V System the same or do they require different 220V plugs? Second, I have a SawStop 3 HP PCS with their in line router table. The saw has a short, internal run of 4 inch flex hose from the dust shroud to the port. Do I have to replace this with vacuum rated hose? The router table insert includes a dust collection box around the router. The dust port on the box is 4 inch but it branches to a 2 1/4 inch hose that runs to the router fence. Does the 2 1/2 inch hose have to be replaced? The saw blade guard also has a 1 1/2 dust port to collect the dust coming off the blade. Will running, simultaneously the 4 inch main saw port and 1 1/2 inch blade guard port or the 4 inch router box port and 2 1/2 inch fence port violate the Supercell "no more than one 4 inch port at a time limit?" I'm a "one man show." I'm not running two tools simultaneously at any point. Thanks for your help.

1) The Supercell and the V-3000 dust collector both use the same NEMA 6-20 plug for 220V power (though the amperage draw is a bit higher with the Supercell). 2) Without knowing the detailed specs on the Sawstop's internal hose, we couldn't say for sure. It's likely not vacuum-pressure rated, but the suction force within the saw itself might not be strong enough for it matter. 3) You should not need to replace the 2.5" hose as it's likely a vacuum hose, though again, we can't say for sure what specs other tools are built by. 4) You shouldn't have any issues running the 4" and smaller ports (1.5" or 2.5") simultaneously on a single tool.

I have a Laguna 14BX bandsaw that has two 4 inch dust ports. I recently purchased a Supercell. I saw a post where someone said an Oneida rep had suggested shutting off the lower dust port and just attaching the supercell to the upper port. Is that a recommended practice or can I use a Y to attach the supercell to both ports..

We recommend that the Supercell be connected to only a single 4" port at a time for best results. With regards to bandsaws, the top dust collection port will usually be doing most of the work anyways since it's right below the cutting area - you shouldn't need to use the bottom port at all and can cap it off with tape when it's not in use.

I have a 30 x 30 shop that I have just completed and I've already installed the supercell. Wow does that thing have suction over a long run of ductwork. I have all the standard machines (table saw, 8" jointer, 15" planer. 18" bandsaw, lathe, drum sander, etc...) all with 4" ports so no issue there. My two questions are these: 1) I want to have a hose drop to my work bench to be able to hook up my palm sanders and belt sanders and to vacuum up the chips and debris from the workbench and surrounding area. These would be 1.5 - 2.5 inch ports. Can that be done with this system? And what type of flexible duct can be used? in order to work properly it cant be too rigid. 2) in my other shop I have several 4" drops that have the flexible expanding hose that I use to vacuum up the floor of the shop. they are hooked up to a early generation Dust Gorilla. Is it possible to do the same with the supercell, or am I stuck with sweeping everything to a floor box connected to the ductwork? thank you.

I currently have an automatically-triggered dust collection system using seven of iVac's tool-triggered blast gates (4" plastic gates) and dust collector switch outlet Do I have anything to be concerned with impacting this existing capability (which wasn't cheap) if I upgrade my Dust Collector to a Supercell? i have a 2hp dc with 4" pvc. it doesnt seem to be strong enought to pull from table saw @550cfm. is the 2hp big enough? what size pipe should i use? ive asked alot of people and they said the 2hp is fine.

I have an 18" planer, 16" jointer, and a 14" Oliver tablesaw. They all have 4" dust ports. I would like to operate the Supercell with the gates at each machine always open. Can I do this and still get good dust collection?

Mark, The Supercell will function much better when only one 4" port is in use at a time. If you absolutely need to have all ports open at once (perhaps because you have multiple operators using the tools simultaneously) then we would suggest the V-System instead because of it higher airflow capacity.

Hi I was all set on getting the mini gorilla as I only use one tool at a time. However the more I look at the super cell the more I believe this may be for me. Especially that I can use it for 4 inch ports and much smaller tools as well. However my only concern… and it is a big one and I cannot find the answer. Will the Supercell have enough CFM to work on my saw stop PCS with overhead dust collection when I’m running it by itself with no other machine? As I’m sure you know it has a 4 inch port that splits off into a little I believe 1 1/2 inch port for the over arm dust collector.

I have about 50 foot of ductwork that I would like to run. I want it to connect to bandsaw, table saw, jointer, planer drum sander with 4" dust ports. I also have a belt sander and 12" disk sander with 2 1/2 " ports. Will the Supercell work for me.

In general yes, the Supercell will work for you, provided that you don't have more than one 4" dust port in use at any one time. If you have multiple tools / ports in use however you would want to reach out our V-System or Dust Gorilla Pro product lines instead. I am getting ready to install a dust collection system I have a garage shop 20x24 I will be constructing a small building on the side garage shop. Piping will run up almost 10 feet threw attic then drop down through ceiling to attach to machinery will the super cell do the job for me? I have table saw band saw planer 13” drill press router and other small tools. Two at most running at one time.

I'm interested in the supercell. But as I briefly look over the pictures for each, it seems to me the V-system has a much better air filtration system on it unless I'm not seeing it properly. I work in enclosed 2x car garage that's heated/cooled. I want to make sure I find a system that helps keep dust down as well.

Eddy, the Supercell's filter is internal so it's not as readily visible from the outside. Both the Supercell and the V-System utilize the same HEPA-grade filter media, but are sized differently relative to the airflow of the system (i.e. different number of pleats, different filter area, different shape, etc.). Bottom line is that they will both offer the same quality of filtration for your shop.

I do not see an Oneida reply to Mathieu. (n Chads original post) I was wondering the same thing. If you use only one big tool at a time is the V system still a better system? Does the supercell really work effectively at up to 100 feet (or is this just a lot of marketing hype)? I would like a straight answer...which tool is preferred in a one many retirement shop that has large tools that will not be used simultaneously (planer table saw, jointer, lathe, etc)?

It's difficult to give a general answer without knowing more specifics on your shop and your tools (length of ducting run, number and size of ports, sq ft of shop, etc.) so in almost every case we would recommend you contact our team of technicians directly for specific info. The Supercell is going to be the better all-around choice for the shop you describe, but depending on how large that planer is, or much that lathe is used, the V-System could come out as the clear winner. The Supercell's performance is one instance where you can believe the hype. It really can suck dust through 100 feet of hose, but it still has it's limitations and Oneida Air Systems always wants to give our customers the tool that will work best for them.

Hello, I am currently running a 3-HP collection system with a 5” trunk and 4” runs/drops for my machines. I have several 2-1/2” - 3” drops for smaller tools and get fair performance in those small lines, but I don’t demand much from them, so I’ve been able to get by this far. I just invested in a CNC which also has a small hose, and unlike the other small hose tools, this will see a LOT of use. I plan to have the CNC run nearly all day, while I am working on other machines. This means that I will have a 4” port open 25-50% of the time, and the small 2-1/2” open 90-100% of the time - simultaneously. The CNC manufacturer DOES NOT recommend high volume/low pressure dust collection, but rather recommends high pressure/low volume dust extraction (my instinct says the same). These machines normally get their own dust extractor, but for reasons of both space, and added db’s in the shop, I’d like to explore all options. Will this be an issue for a supercell to pull from a 4” port machine simultaneously with a 2-1/2” CNC port? (I’m open to either the supercell or turbo supercell, but Like everyone else, I’d like a balance of performance and cost., as replacing my entire system to add CNC dust extraction will be a decision which will take some justification) PS, the runs will not be long. My current shop will only have 50-60’’ runs at a max (and the CNC will be center stage with only a 25’ run). Thank you

Hi Joe, A sales representative reached out separately to you in regard to this so please be on the look out for that but from the information provided the Supercell Turbo would be the best option due to the 4" and 2.5" port being used at the same time as the additional CFM that the Turbo provides would be needed for this type of set up.
