What Duct Works with the Supercell?

Traditional dust collectors are designed to move high-volumes of air at low pressure – typically in the vicinity of 10" WC. Because that’s not a lot of pressure to begin with, the ductwork for these systems must be designed very carefully to minimize pressure loss from every length of pipe, every bend, every reduction in pipe diameter, and the added friction of flex hose at the end of many runs. A well-thought out and implemented ductwork design is critical to the optimal performance of traditional dust collectors.

Of course, the Supercell isn't a traditional dust collector. Because the Supercell operates at such a high-pressure (97.8" WC), any pressure loss from ductwork will have a negligible impact on the overall performance of the system. In other words, the Supercell simplifies ducting considerations because the ductwork guidelines for traditional dust collectors no longer apply.

Ductwork Design Rules

High-Pressure Systems
e.g. Supercell
Low-Pressure Systems
e.g. Mini-Gorilla, V-System, Dust Gorilla Pro, etc.
Main Line Use 4" pipe or hose all the way to the tool. Start as large as possible (up to the size of the collector's inlet) and reduce at branches if needed.
Branches Use any kind of joint, including Tee-Joints, for your ductwork branches. Only use 45 degree Wye joints to form new branches. Reduce splitting as much as possible.
Turns Use any radius of elbow, including short radius turns. Use large radius, 90 degree turns or two 45 degree elbows coupled together
Total Length Run ducting wherever convenient: Perimeter layouts are perfectly fine. Run ducting to tools in most direct path; Minimize overall length.
Drops Either connect small hose directly to the main line (at a Tee joint for example) or run 4" right to the tool with a reducer at the end. Gradually reduce in size from the main line to the tool inlet.
Duct Type Should only use high-pressure rated components, such as Quick-Clamp ducting and vacuum rated hose.* Varies, but typically 24-26 gauge ducting is acceptable along with wire-reinforced flex hose.

And that's it! Welcome to the new world of simplified ductwork design courtesy of the Supercell – the world's first universal dust collector. Read on for some choice examples and part lists for recommended Supercell ductwork layouts.

* Important Note

Because the Supercell moves air and debris at such high velocity, it’s important to use static conductive ducting and static dissipative hose (such as the vacuum-rated hose supplied with your Supercell), and/or take steps to ensure a path to ground for any build-up of static electricity within the ducting. For this reason, we recommend against using PVC pipe for your Supercell ductwork.

Hi -Do you know if the duct that is internal to the Sawstop Cabinet saws will meet the high pressure criteria?
Oneida Air Systems

Ducting components built into a woodworking machine should be built for dust collection applications, but we can't verify the gauge of the steel used in this tool specifically - that would be a question better suited for Sawstop themselves.

Would the SuperCell be appropriate for use as a dust collector for my cabinet sandblaster? All I sand blast are natural stones and it creates a lot of fine dust.

what is the static pressure design requirement at the tool interface?
Oneida Air Systems

Michael, This would be highly dependent on the tool in question. In general, however, tools will require higher static pressure when they produce dusts at higher velocities, larger quantities, or in areas where the dust intake cannot be positioned close to the source.

Hi, I know that 90 and t angles into machines are acceptable but what about a 90 elbow straight out of the supercell? All the diagrams I see have a hose for the first connector to the supercell, but I’d like/need to put a 90 metal elbow duct directly up from the supercell to my ceiling, where it would then branch out. That work?

Zachary, we would not recommend installing an elbow directly onto the inlet. Cyclone separators work most effectively when the incoming air turbulence is minimized, which is typically done using a straight length of pipe or hose. That being said, if you absolutely have to install an elbow, the Supercell will readily accommodate this feature more more efficiently than any standard low pressure dust collector.

Can you have a 6’ drop from the cyclone to the dust bin?
Oneida Air Systems
Loading...
Yes you can extend the length of flex-hose between the cyclone and the drum to meet your shop's needs. It will not affect your collection performance and can allow for much better positioning of the system in your shop in some cases. Keep in mind that you'll want to retain access to the Supercell's main body for accessing the pulse filter cleaning system. Due to the suction power of the Supercell, any hose (including that between the cyclone and drum) must be rated for high-pressures so as not to collapse or pull up the drum during operation.

My Supercell dust bin lifts up during operation and slams down when I shut the unit off. Is this ok?
Oneida Air Systems
Loading...
Johnnie, this will typically occur when the dust bin connection hose contracts slightly under the Supercell's high suction. Once the drum begins to fill with material it will be heavy enough to hold the drum down under suction. If you find that this rising action is beginning to loosen the hose connection over time you may want to look into raising the drum up with wedges or a drum dolly.

I plan on putting the supercell outside of the shop (garage) in a 3' X 6" enclosed room. How much venting would I need to on the walls to ensure that the heat can dissipate and to ensure proper airflow.
Oneida Air Systems
Loading...
Hi Glen, As a general rule, we recommend 1 sq ft of ventilation for every 500 CFM that the system has. So for a larger, 2500 CFM dust collector you would want 5 sq ft of ventilation. This does not need to be a singular vent and could be done via many smaller vents if necessary. For the Supercell, 1 square foot would be sufficient. Another very important point to consider is that you want to ensure that your shop has proper ventilation to make-up for the air sucked out of it by the dust collector. Otherwise the shop may become a vacuum chamber or worse, unintentionally pull in noxious air from other sources like furnaces and water heaters.

I have an existing 5" metal ducting network, with 4" drop to each tool. Would the supercell turbo be suitable?
Oneida Air Systems
Loading...
That would still be dependent on what tools you're connecting them to and how many ports are in use at once. Referring to the table above, the Supercell is really meant for only one 4" port at a time. With a 5" main line, you won't see any benefit to having that larger size since the Supercell's inlet is also 4", so you'd just be adding in an unnecessary reducer.

Is there an option for a "coil" of high pressure hose? I want to have one outlet serve a number of different tools. My plan is to have a coil of hose that I attach to the tool I'm using. I've heard the high pressure hose is very stiff--would it work for this purpose?
Oneida Air Systems
Loading...
Peter, The high vacuum pressure rated hose is going to be stiffer then a standard flex hose as it is not meant to collapse from the negative pressure it will be under. Due to this, it will probably be difficult to have it coil. It could work, it will probably need a large reel to handle it though.
