Is it normal for my dust collector to run hot?

Yes, all motors – including those used by Oneida Air Systems and other manufacturers – generate heat. One horsepower is 745.7 watts, so a 5HP motor will consume 3728.5 watts of electricity as it operates. Some of this electricity is immediately converted into heat due to mechanical friction in the motor and resistance in the wires. The rest [the majority] is converted into to the work of moving air. All that mechanical energy in the moving air will eventually be converted to heat via friction somewhere within the system.

Most of the time this may not be noticeable, but in a small or well insulated room a 5HP fan blower motor would be comparable to having 4 space heaters running! That's why it's so important to have 1-2" of clearance around all sides of the motor for proper ventilation and cooling. Additionally, all of our motors feature heavy-duty "F" class wiring for managing heat.
